A 10-month-old Belgian Malinois named Rylee, accidentally fell overboard in the middle of Lake Michigan after the family’s boat encountered some mechanical issues. The dog swam about 6 miles to the shore, and walked over 12 miles through the woods to the campground where it was reunited with its owners the next day.
Edward Casas, 56, has been boating with his wife, Kristin Casas, 49 when they started having problems with the boat. Edward was down the engine room fixing the problem while his wife was on top of the boat steering. After about 10 minutes, Rylee could not be found anywhere in the boat nor in the water. According to ABC news, Edward immediately declared ‘mayday dog overboard’ over the radio.
The following day, a group of campers alerted the couple that they spotted a dog in the woods to which they rushed immediately. The local lost dog rescue group was of tremendous help.
Edward told ABC, “Let me tell you, I’m not the kind of guy that cries — but, oh, did this make me cry. I am so proud of this dog.”
