There is no such thing as forever, Soft Styrofoam cups will be no more so say good bye to those to-go cups that you used to drink in. Soon, San Francisco residents will get used on drinking coffee out of something else.
Polystyrene foam or known to be Styrofoam was passed to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors to be banned, last week. Starting on January 1, 2017, food packaging, packing peanuts, take-away containers, coffee cups, foam dock floatings, mooring buoys, and pool toys will be prohibited.
Why ban it ? Here are 5 facts you need to know about Styrofoam.
#1. It does not biodegrade
Styrofoam when broken into smaller pieces is harder to clean up. It also suffocates the wetland when exposed and may cause pollution.
#2. Unwanted dose of toxins may leach from it.
When in a hurry, we often drink our coffees in a cup which is made of styrofoam – yes, it may keep our coffee hot but synthetic chemicals and fossil fuels may leach and mix with our coffee which makes it deadly.
#3. It may cause health problems.
Styrofoam is made of chemicals and not only in hot water, chemicals may leach if they come in contact with greasy or acidic food. This is alarming because it may cause health problem.
#4. Animals may die.
EPS is often mistaken as food for fish and turtles. It cannot be easily digested by them because the foam could be full of poison due to the contamination , thus this causes their death.
#5. It can’t be recycled.
Most part of the community recycling centers do not accept throwaway foam food containers.
Be alarmed! Prevention is better than cure.
